RECOMMONDAY

Today, I'm recommending a book for the second time.  The first time I recommended the Complete Cul de Sac, I didn't have the book yet.  (Of course I felt comfortable recommending the book without seeing it because I'd read all the comics.)

But I got the two volume set, and I was surprised to find out that the week of Cul de Sac comics I did as a guest cartoonist while Richard was trying to work out how to continue the strip while battling Parkinson's Disease, as well as the weeks of a few other guest cartoonists, made it into the book.  I really thought Richard would omit these from the collection, which is obviously about HIS Cul de Sac.

I'm honored to be included.  As my son said, "That means your Cul de Sac comics are CANONICAL!"  It was fun to try to produce these comics in Richard's writing/drawing style as precisely as I could.

Anyway, this is hardly a reason to recommend the book any more than I already have — just a reason to write about it again.

By the way, the other guest cartoonists who filled in for Richard are: Michael Jantze, Corey Pandolph, Lincoln Peirce, Stephan Pastis and Mo Willems.

GWEEK PODCAST 128

Gweek-logo-100

I had a lot of fun doing another Gweek podcast.  Mark Frauenfelder is always cool to talk to, and I had a great time podcast-meeting A.J. Jacobs, who was really interesting and funny.  We talked about:

– when Mickey Mouse was mean;

– an idiot-proof way to compose music on you iPhone;

– Bill de Blasio's dream of bringing NYC back to its "Warriors"-era glory;

– Bear Baiting;

– the defintion of family, and how it relates to a Giant Mousetrap;

– 3-D printing food; and

– more, obviously.

My one regret is that I didn't ask a follow up question on 3-D printed food, which I still don't get.  It seems like if you're going to use it to feed a starving country, the key is to get the INGREDIENTS to that country, not process them through a contraption to make it a funny shape.

Sting last ship

I kind of love Sting's new album, The Last Ship.  It's the story, in songs that evoke old English folk songs, of various characters who live in a dying shipbuilding town, and Sting often sings in character, doing voices and accents.  Every time I think it may lapse into laughability or pretension, it overcomes that by becoming more clever and more beautiful.

TOM THE DANCING BUG ON MEDIUM MONDAYS

Nib

So the great news is that editorial cartoonist Matt Bors has started a comics site on Medium.com, called The Nib, and today it takes a turn to become more structured, more extensive, and more awesome.  Among the otherwise great work Matt has assembled, Tom the Dancing Bug will be appearing every Monday, starting today.

More info, including the roster and schedule here.  Check it out.

I'm really glad to be part of this really cool project.
