GWEEK 024: John Hodgman

What a blast doing these Gweek podcasts is turning out to be.

This week, the gang interviews John Hodgman, who I now think belongs to some other species (homo sapiens anecdotus?) for his uncanny ability to speak extemporaneously on any subject with eloquence, impeccable diction, unerring grammar, and most importantly, great humor.  Dude's FUNNY, and a marvel on a podcast.

I was in the fourth seat, so I tried to stay mostly in the background, but had great fun rolling along, and chiming in where I could.

I should note that toward the end of the podcast, when I agree with John about new superhero comics, it was mostly because of what I've read about them; I haven't read many new superhero comics at all.  But the reason I haven't read them is consistent with John's point; they seem too bogged down by decades of the characters' history, continuity and reinterpretations.

Anyway,

Here is John's new book, which I am halfway through, and find delightful and hilarious.

Here is the new edition of Mark's great book.

Here is some info about the book I spoke about, My Friend Dahmer, by Derf Backderf.

And here are some juiceboxes, great fun at parties. It's nice to know that there isn't a deatil about John's and my Great Meeting that was too small to escape our notice.  (By the way, I know a guy in Pasadena who can hook you up with some pre-Prohibition era juiceboxes that are sublime!)

Comics Recommendations

Many people ask me for recommendations for comics (especially for kids), so FWIW I've set up an Amazon site that lists comics and books I like.  Link on the sidebar, or click here.

FWIW (pronounced fwiw) v. 1.  To recommend for the love of comics and friends  2.  To receive a tiny kickback from Amazon, but not mention it

Dr. Seuss’s Bippolo Seed??!!

Seriously, this is one of the reasons I've always loved Boing Boing.  They bring things to my attention that should be front page news, but are barely even reported on.

I'm not even talking about Xeni and others' essential blog and twitter coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement and the criminally underreported police backlash.

Cory just wrote that there's a new book collecting Dr. Seuss stories that haven't been reprinted since their original publication 60 or 70 years ago!  And these aren't marginal pieces, but fully realized Seuss material that stand alongside the rest of his work?!

If there has been any news coverage of this, I've missed it.  And as much as I've tried, I have not missed the journalistic / media frenzy that greeted the triumphant return of the McRib sandwich.

People, Dr. Seuss is one of the most important artists of the 20th century.  This is a cause for national celebration.  I can not wait to see it.

UPDATE and SIDE NOTE to the publisher of this book:  I haven't seen the titles to the six other stories collected, but I'd be very surprised if none of them yielded a better book title than "The Bippolo Seed."

THIS WEEK’S COMIC

Oh, Lucky Ducky.  Take it easy on the 1%.  They're lonely, and very sensitive.

Note that I rejected an Astute Observer's suggestion that I follow up last week's comic (link below — I'd neglected to post it on the blog) with a comic this week solely about hobo rape.  I hope my restraint is appreciated.

Billy Dare to the Rescue!

If Spielberg / Jackson wanted to make a movie about Tintin, but with the violence pumped up, they should have come to me about Billy Dare.  He's a somewhat similar character, but he takes a bit more… direct approach.

Film rights currently available.
